Xia Pu

For a person who has lived far from the coast, "tidal flat" was unheard of. It was only after viewing images of Xiapu that I understood what a tidal flat was.

In simple terms, it is muddy land exposed by changing water levels after high and low tide. In geomorphology, it is called the intertidal zone.

This land is rich in aquatic resources, including mussels, scallops, clams, oysters, mud clams, razor clams, seaweed, nori, and so on.

When the fishermen saw a lot of bamboo on the hills, they made full use of the plant. After cutting down the bamboo, they inserted it into the tidal flats. The bamboo was used for drying seaweed and sea kelp.

Little did the fishermen in Xiapu realize that their daily work on the tidal flats, and the bamboo sticks inserted into the flats, would become a kind of art.

The scene on the tidal flats changes endlessly.

The bamboo sticks can look surreal, and the tidal flats turn golden at sunset.

When it is foggy, the scenes are like ink paintings.

Xiapu is called "the most beautiful tidal flats", and there is much truth in that. The photographic subjects are the ever-changing tidal flats and the fishermen making a living from the sea.
